Technologies- Design

In Genesis God is revealed as the Original Designer

We are created beings.
Like the rest of creation we have been intelligently designed for a purpose, to complete a specific individual task in the plan of salvation. In Design and Technologies we explore the processes and ways of working required to participate in intelligently designing and creating. At Faith we remember that God in his most true essence is Love and as we were created in love, with a purpose, we must also design and create with love and a sense of responsibility to our general and individual specific task.

It has been compiled by James Caldwell, a highly experienced leader in delivering the Technologies curriculum. It will be a great way to get into Technologies and Design and enable you to build to an amazing presentation at the upcoming Term 3 Science and Technology Fair!

About Technologies and Design

God has made us in His image to be co-creators who humbly and obediently respond to His Spirit's promptings to bring about positive and life-giving change. God is all-knowing and he can give us insight into the needs and causes of problems around us and the impact that potential solutions may have. He can also give us the wisdom to help us direct our energies and time. God also has the keys to enabling us to work collaboratively so we can achieve what He puts in our hearts and minds to do.

Technology is more than being able to type fast and use a computer or play on an App.  lt is about creating designed solutions to real-world problems and building the knowledge and skills to do so. It is also about understanding and critically analysing how technologies impact individuals, families, communities, and our world in the past, now and into the future.

We see technologies being applied in a range of contexts and for a range of purposes. In the Design and Technologies strand this is divided into  Engineering principles and system  (e.g. housing, transport, communication, logistics, recreational)  and Food and fibre production (e.g. to feed and clothe us). The Design and Technologies syllabus has two specialisations in Food (think food technology, safety, nutrition) and another in the use and application of  Materials and technologies (think both traditional materials such as wood, metal and plastic but also extending to electronics and robotics).

Design thinking and the Design Process and Production Skills are at the core of the Design and Technologies syllabus, and support students in all stages of the design process:

  • investigating and defining
  • generating and designing
  • producing and implementing
  • evaluating
  • collaborating and managing.
